How to Declutter Your Home
Most people think that de-cluttering in your home is impossible and that they're destined to have a home that is always filled with clutter. De-cluttering your home is the simple part maintaining it is where the real problem lies.Just about anybody can do some spring cleaning and de-cluttering but keeping your home de-cluttered requires that you adhere to certain principles and strategies. You don't have to be born organized to be organized. Being organized is like any other good habit, it's practiced!
Keys to Maintaining a De-cluttered Home
Breaking the hoarder's mentality
Make sure that every item in the room has its specific space and that all unnecessary items are removed. Every item that you keep should have a valid reason for being kept, otherwise you end up with lots of junk in your space and eventually it will become cluttered once again.
Any papers like bills, receipts etc that need to be kept should only be retained for no more than a year. You can apply this method to other items like magazines and newspapers.
Always examine your reasons for keeping (hording) an item, most of the times a person hangs onto stuff that they've been given as a gift for sentimental reasons that are really ridiculous, like their baby's clothing from a child that is now an adult (don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you can't keep your children's stuff but not every single one!)
When organizing any space neat little containers, boxes and files always look better in a room as oppose to a group or stack of stuff just piled into one. Labeling those containers is also very important. It helps you to know exactly what in the container without having to dig through it.
Here's how you start;
1. Set aside a full day to tackle your clutter. If necessary try to organize room by room, and approach with an open mind. It's only a lot of work if you look at it that way.
2. Clear the entire space of every scrap of furniture so you can look at the space with a fresh eye and be able to better utilize the space.
3. Sort every item and determine whether it stays or goes, be honest with yourself, making a pile for the 'keeps' and the 'throw away'. You can even make a pile to sell and have a garage sale depending on how much stuff you've got.
4. When you sorted out all the unnecessary items from your space start putting all the like things together and assign a container for it and so on. When you've done that put everything back into the room, excluding the stuff to be thrown away, (you can even do a little rearranging to spice things up a bit.)
Now that you've de-cluttered your home make sure that you maintain it by returning every item you use in that space back to its assigned place and that every items has its place and is kept in that space. Once these organization methods are continually practiced it should become second nature.
Sounds simple enough but if you're like me I know you need a little more help than what was offered here if you feel the same way then take a look at this
